          Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes

Lisa called the Recreation Committee meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.

MINUTES:    A motion was made by Melissa and seconded by Erin to accept
                        the minutes of the April 9, 2013 meeting.
       The minutes of April 9, 2013 were accepted as written.
                                       
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
                                                                               
             Programs:
        
                               Summer   
Denise handed out a summer packet detailing general information concerning class registrations and attendance, pass sales and a 3-year summer comparison chart, daily attendance and revenue. We welcomed more than 45,300 visitors to the pool this summer.  The average daily attendance was 687. The highest attendance day was July 15th with 1,814 visitors to the pool.  On July 10th, we passed the one half million guests mark. We celebrated the pool’s 10th birthday on  July 16th with cake, watermelon, water games for the youngsters and a cannonball contest for the swimmers.  
Non-residents boosted the daily cash revenue, however, overall the revenue from the pool was down this year. There was 1 week less of the All Day program, the pool was closed a number of days due to the weather and some of the programs like the higher swim levels, the basketball and the field sports do not seem to draw many participants.  Denise likes offering the higher level swim classes even though they don’t get huge numbers, because she likes keeping the older children interested in swimming.  Many of them go on to get their certifications and become lifeguards in future years.  Denise will be thinking about making some changes to the basketball and field sports for next year.  She is thinking about offering a new type of class.  Melissa mentioned street hockey and Lisa mentioned basketball for much younger children using shorter basketball apparatus.
Denise complimented the summer staff and said it was a pleasure working with them. They handled their responsibilities in a mature and professional manner.  They were attentive, conscientious, engaging and encouraging to all the children. She had received numerous compliments from parents about the high quality of staff.  Melissa commented on how she had seen a lifeguard take charge of a situation involving children fooling around at the driving board and she was
impressed.  
The lap pool caulking is being removed and replaced with Sikaflex and a marine strength adhesive sealant.  This is a recommended procedure to help prevent water leakage.  This procedure was done last year on the family pool after the major leak was detected.  The pools will be winterized - the water gets lowered for the winter because of snow and ice and then the pools are covered. The cover is currently on the family pool and the lap pool will be covered once the caulking work is completed. And just in case you’ve seen a rowboat in the pool…that’s how they do the caulking!    
                    
        Before/After School Programs
Registration was on August 1st and things went smoothly.  All registrations were done on-line. Denise went over the numbers for the Before & After School Programs. We currently care for 260 children each day.
    Davis Hill – 50 AM and 52 PM  (9 wait listed)
    Mayo        -  52 AM and 52 PM  (7 wait listed AM, 9 wait listed PM)
    Dawson     – 22 AM and 32 PM
There was a lot of movement from the wait list to the active roster at Davis Hill in the morning, and we currently have 2 slots available.  All staff has been hired.  Lisa asked if we had to hire more staff because of the numbers.  Denise said she has 5 staff people in each of the morning and afternoon programs at Mayo & Davis Hill.  She is required by the Department of Early Education and Care to have at least 1 staff person for each 13 students.  Denise said she always hires an extra person over the required number, because then if someone calls out of work the program will still meet the EEC requirement.  The Committee commented that the increase in the numbers might be due to All Day Kindergarten being available at all the schools now.
The licensor from the Department of Early Education and Care visited Mayo School in June to review the files, paperwork and the After School Program in order to have the license to operate this program renewed.  The license was renewed for another 2 years         

  Adult Programs
Adult programs start in September.  Due to activities at the different schools, the starting dates of the classes are varied.  We are introducing 2 new fitness classes this session: Alphabet Soup and Re- Shape.  Alphabet Soup is a little bit of everything with cardio exercises, boot camp strength challenges and yoga’s stretch and meditation.  There are 20 participants registered for this class which begins September 12th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Mayo.  The Re-Shape class includes cardio-Zumba and kickboxing moves and Pilattes core strengthening and toning exercises.  There are 10 registrants for the Tuesday class that begins September 17th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Mayo.  The Thursday class of Re-Shape begins September 26th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Mountview and currently has  5 enrolled.  The Tuesday and Thursday morning Hatha Yoga classes, which start this week, are both sold out with 16 participants each morning. Yoga for Every “Body” begins Thursday, September 12th from 7:00-7:50 p.m. at Mayo and has 7 registered participants.  Men’s basketball began Thursday, September 5th and Women’s volleyball will begin Thursday, September 26th.      
       
Miscellaneous:
All fields were released for play on August 24th.
Arrangements have been made to have a new backstop and player protection areas installed at the Rice School baseball field.  Work should start in the next couple of weeks.
A “winter festival” is being planned for Holden to be held on December 7th, the same day as Santa’s arrival.  Different activities are being planned throughout the day and will conclude with Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the town Christmas tree.  Glenn Gaudette and Bob Lavigne are on the committee planning this event.  Denise is part of the committee and will have more information after a meeting being held this Friday (September 13th).  Denise is still planning on doing Santa, the goodie bags, hot chocolate, popcorn and having the Girl Scouts sing as in the past.  Please mark your calendars and plan on being part of this annual Christmas tree lighting.
Nancy commented about the number of dogs running all around at Trout Brook with no leashes.
Denise commented that the fields at Mountview will still be available for our use next spring.
